When considering the potential influence of Saturn in Libra on marriage, it is interesting to take a look at the changes created by a few of its planetary predecessors.
Uranus, the planet of revolution, liberation and social causes, was in Libra from 1968 – 1975. By the time Uranus entered the sign, the Feminist Movement was well under way; however, once the planet of anarchy entered the picture, the movement grew more vocal, more influential and more radical.
In fact, a very popular image still associated with the feminist movement is the alleged “ “bra burning” during the 1968 protest against the Miss American contest. I say “alleged” because no bras were actually burned; rather, bras, girdles and nylons were simply tossed into a garbage can to protest the present climate that valued woman for their beauty and not their person. Draft cards – not bras – were being burned in the sixties (yes, Uranus played a hand in that too), but it was the media that created this urban legend.
Uranus is also the ruler of technology, and in 1970, television audiences witnessed the debut of The Mary Tyler Moore show, a groundbreaking sitcom that featured a never-married career woman as the central character. Despite occasional romances, the character of Mary Richards ended her seven-year run as a single, independent woman who did not need a man to survive or to be happy.
Meanwhile, in the real world, life continued to imitate art. As the planet of independence continued its journey in Libra, women were returning to the workforce in droves.
As they began to achieve financial independence and discover new relationship opportunities, many women sought to liberate themselves from their marriages.
However, as liberating as Uranus’s influence may have been on society, it was not enough to overcome the stringent divorce laws in existence at the time.
It would take more than Uranian disruption to break the legal bonds of marriage.
It would take Pluto.
It's interesting that the gay marriage trial here in CA has been going on while Saturn and Pluto have been in square aspect. They expect a ruling sometime between now and March which would fit with the transit. I am wondering how this will play out. Will Saturn in Libra keep marriage conservative or will Pluto in Capricorn tear down the old laws and create new ones?
